Crime Reporting System

Introduction :

The Crime Reporting System is a web-based application designed to allow citizens to report crimes online and help authorities manage and respond to complaints efficiently. It bridges the communication gap between the public and law enforcement, providing transparency, accountability, and faster response.


Project Objective:

To create a secure and responsive platform where:

  • Citizens can report crimes anonymously or by logging in.

  • Police/administrators can track, verify, and respond to crime reports.

  • The system ensures timely updates and status tracking of reports.


User Roles & Functionalities:

1. Admin / Police Officer

  • Login to dashboard

  • View all reported crimes

  • Assign crime cases to officers

  • Update crime status (e.g., Under Investigation, Resolved)

  • View citizen details (if not anonymous)

2. Citizen / Public User

  • Register/Login or continue as anonymous user

  • Submit a new crime report with details (location, type, description)

  • Optionally attach evidence (e.g., photo or video file)

  • Track status of previously submitted reports

  • Receive email notifications about case progress (optional)


Core Modules Explained:

Authentication Module

  • Role-based login system for users and police/admin

  • Secure registration with hashed passwords

  • Option for users to report crimes anonymously without login

Crime Report Module

  • Users can fill in a report form: title, description, crime type, date/time, location

  • File attachment feature (photo/video proof)

  • Status: Submitted → Verified → Under Investigation → Resolved

Admin Dashboard

  • List and filter reports by status/type/date

  • Update status or mark resolved

  • Assign cases to investigating officers

  • View analytics such as number of crimes reported per area

Report Status Tracking

  • Logged-in users can view their previous reports

  • Each report shows status, update history, and resolution message

  • Anonymous users can track using a unique reference number


User Interface Features:

  • Responsive and clean UI using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap

  • Crime reporting form with location dropdown, date/time picker, and file upload

  • Admin dashboard with crime list table, filters, and status update buttons

  • Use of color-coded tags for different crime statuses


System Workflow:

  1. User Entry:

    • A user accesses the site and chooses to log in or report anonymously.

  2. Crime Submission:

    • User fills in the report form with details and (optionally) uploads a file.

  3. Admin Review:

    • Admin sees the newly reported crime in dashboard and assigns it to a police officer or marks it for verification.

  4. Case Progression:

    • Officer updates the status of the case (e.g., Under Investigation, Resolved).

  5. User Notification:

    • User can log in or use reference ID to check current status of their report.
