IoT Water Quality Monitor

Overview:

The IoT Water Quality Monitoring System is a smart solution designed to monitor key water parameters such as pH, temperature, turbidity, TDS (Total Dissolved Solids), and more in real time. This system is ideal for municipal water supplies, agriculture, aquaculture, industrial wastewater, and smart cities. It helps ensure water safety, detect contamination early, and provide data-driven insights for water management.

Key Features:

  • Real-Time Water Quality Monitoring:
Continuously reads sensor data and updates the cloud/dashboard.

  • Live Dashboard:
Graphical representation of water quality metrics (pH, turbidity, etc.) using charts and gauges.

  • Threshold-Based Alerts:
Sends alerts via SMS, email, or app notification if any parameter goes out of safe range.

  • Predictive Analytics (Optional):
Uses ML to predict water contamination or quality trends over time.

  • Multi-Location Support:
Can monitor water sources from multiple remote locations.

Water Quality Parameters Monitored:

  1. pH Level – Measures acidity or alkalinity of water

  2. Turbidity – Measures water clarity (cloudiness)

  3. TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) – Indicates the amount of minerals/salts

  4. Temperature – Affects chemical processes and biological organisms

  5. Conductivity – Measures the ability of water to conduct electricity

  6. DO (Dissolved Oxygen) – Critical for aquatic life (optional advanced sensor)

Technology Stack:

  • IoT Hardware:

    • Microcontroller: ESP32 / Arduino UNO with Wi-Fi or GSM module

    • Sensors: pH sensor, turbidity sensor, TDS sensor, DS18B20 (temperature), conductivity sensor

    • Power Supply: Solar/battery option for remote locations

  • Backend:

    • PHP / Node.js / Java with REST API to handle incoming data and manage alerts

    • Cloud integration (Firebase, ThingsBoard, or custom server)

  • Frontend:

    • HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript dashboard to show live data and history

    • Interactive charts (using Chart.js / D3.js) for trends

  • Database:

    • MySQL / MongoDB to store sensor readings, timestamps, and user profiles

Modules:

  1. Sensor Data Acquisition Module:
Collects values from multiple water quality sensors and sends to the cloud via Wi-Fi.

  2. Threshold Alert Module:
Triggers alerts if any metric exceeds safety limits (e.g., pH < 6.5 or > 8.5).

  3. Data Visualization Module:
Shows live readings, historical graphs, and download reports.

  4. Admin Panel:
Manage sensor locations, view logs, and set safe limits for alerts.

  5. Predictive Module (Optional):
Uses ML to analyze patterns in water quality (e.g., seasonal changes, contamination prediction).
